It's finally Christmas again! The children look forward to Santa Claus and his assistants bringing gifts to them at night, and after eating the snacks, carrots and milk left by them, they will go on the road. Far away, must be tired!
Originated from Christmas when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, how did Santa Claus walk into it?
Santa's "life experience"
The "prototype" of Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas (270-343 AD), an Orthodox bishop of the Roman Empire in the third century AD.
Saint Nicholas has been a religious believer in Christianity since he was a child, and he became a bishop when he was young. Legend has it that he was wise, charitable, and wealthy. After the death of his parents, he received a large inheritance, but he distributed all the money to the poor. There is a story about him described like this:
One man went bankrupt, and the creditor threatened to take away his three daughters. This person thinks that the only way is to marry their daughters, but suffers from lack of money to buy dowry for them. After Saint Nicholas heard it, one night, he quietly threw a bag of gold coins through the family's window. Later, he put another bag of gold coins, which was regarded as a dowry for the second daughter. The third time, when he was trying to put the gold bag into a stocking that was drying by the fire, he was spotted by the father. But Saint Nicholas told this father not to tell anyone until after his death.
The origin of Christmas gifts
In order to commemorate Saint Nicholas, later generations quietly gave gifts to each other on December 6, when he died. December 6 is called Saint Nicholas Night. This custom is especially prosperous in the Netherlands. In 1623, Dutch immigrants brought this custom to New Amsterdam in the American continent, which later became New York. The adults put gifts in stockings hanging by the fire on the night of San Nicolas. The next morning, the children can get a surprise.
And the name of Saint Nicholas, Saint Nicholas, evolved from Sant Niklass in Dutch to Sinter Klass, then to Santa Claus, and became the name of "Santa Claus" now.
Reindeer and sleigh joined
According to the Christian historian William Federer, it was said in the Middle Ages that Saint Nicholas was the former guard of the savior, and he checked people's behavior every year. This comes from the "Revelation" in the "New Testament". "Revelation" says that Jesus will return to the world on a white horse at the end of judgment.
When this statement reached Norway, reindeer replaced the white horse. So St. Nikola found the North Pole as a residence in Norway, and the reindeer became his helper, and the sleigh became his transportation. These legends were brought to the melting pot of America along with immigrants.
Image of santa claus
The present image of Santa Claus is the work of Thomas Nast, an American political cartoonist in the 19th century. Nast is also the creator of the "elephant" of the Republican Party and the "donkey" of the Democratic Party.
In 1862, Nast published his first sketch of Santa Claus. In the following 22 years, he published more than 30 cartoon drawings of Santa Claus, all of which were cheerful, cheerful, fat and kind men. In his last cartoon, he colored Santa Claus and made him wear a red jacket with white burrs.
In 1930, Chicago artist Haddon Sundblom was invited to paint Santa Claus in the Coca-Cola Company advertisement. In addition to the classic red coat with white frayed edges, Sundblom painted Santa Claus as an image of red lips, blue eyes and a ruddy complexion. In the following 30 years, with advertisements, television and other media, the image of "Santa Claus" became popular in the United States and became deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.
